Marsden in a Box

The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that James Marsden, he who played Cyclops in the X-MEN movies and Lois Lane’s new squeeze in SUPERMAN RETURNS, is in final negotiations to star opposite Cameron Diaz in the Richard Kelly directed THE BOX, based on the short story ‘Button, Button’ by Richard Matheson.

Marsden might have been a dick in his two most famous roles, but for this role in particular, it looks like that’s going to work to his advantage, as he plays Diaz’s unhappy husband in the film. How you could be unhappy and married to someone along the likes of Diaz is beyond me, but there are stranger things in the universe that I don’t understand (like our addiction to celebrity gossip).

Kelly adapted the story from a 1980s episode of ‘The Twilight Zone’ which adapted it from the Matheson short (you follow me?), and it goes a little something like this: When an unhappily married couple receives a box from a stranger, telling them that if they push a button on the box, they’ll receive a hefty amount of cash — and someone they don’t know will die.

Wow, that’s hardcore. It also sounds like an awesome idea for a movie, and I can’t wait to see what Kelly has up his sleeve with this one (it’s also nice to see he isn’t waiting so long in-between films this time around). Marsden and Diaz? Yeah, I can dig it – can you? Stick around for more on THE BOX, in the meantime, get ready for Kelly’s SOUTHLAND TALES, in theaters everywhere November 9th.
