It’s safe to say one remake that most people could care less about is the upcoming US remake of Pascal Laugier’s MARTYRS. And when I say they could care less about it, I mean people just don’t want this thing to happen.
Now that’s understandable considering how well the original film was received. But alas this is Hollywood and if there’s money to be made, it will be. That’s why the producers on this remake have already tapped a director to tackle the project? Who dares attempt to adapt Laugier’s impressive film? THE LAST EXORCISM’s Daniel Stamm, that’s who!
Needless to say Stamm is a very interesting choice for this project. What do you guys think? Is this bad news from the start or are you willing to give Stamm a chance? Check out what the director told The LA Times’ 24 Frames following the announcement:
“Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I’m looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.”
Um… Okay. That’s already sounding like this thing won’t begin to match up to the original. But that’s not all! Stamm goes on to explain a bit more as to what his film will be about:
“Every time you think you know where it’s going, it goes somewhere else. It plays on things that are familiar — like two friends who can’t be separated, kind of a Forrest Gump and Jenny situation. But then it takes a turn, and in doing so asks interesting quesitons. ‘If you have a best friend in the world and she goes crazy, how much do you owe this friend to go down with them?’ It’s much more than a horror film.”
