Marvel and Hulu add Julian McMahon to the main cast of Runaways

Today, Variety has learned that NIP/TUCK, CHARMED and DIRK GENTLY's HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY actor Julian McMahon has been added to the cast of Marvel and Hulu's forthcoming RUNAWAYS television series.

Created by the legendary comic book scribe Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, PAPER GIRLS, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD) and artist Adrian Alphona (MS. MARVEL), the much-celebrated Marvel series tells the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against their parents when the kids discover they are part of an evil underground organization. McMahon will play Jonah. While his origins and ultimate intentions are unknown, he is a pivotal player in the main characters’ rebellion against their parents.

Recently, executive producers and showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage said, “We’re incredibly excited to add Julian to our exceptional cast and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the world of Marvel’s ‘Runaways."

As you're probably aware, this is not the first time that McMahon has dipped his toes in the Marvel pool. Not long ago, McMahon starred as the psychotic scientist, Doctor Doom, in the 2005 version of FANTASTIC FOUR. The seasoned actor then wore the villain's mask, once again, for the film's sequel, FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER.

My guess is that Julian will assume one of the many parental roles on the new RUNAWAYS program. In my mind's eye, I can totally see him dressed in a crimson red cloak, participating in whatever cult-like ceremony his group might get up to. My question is: Will be be the father of Gertrude Yorkes, Karolina Dean, or Molly Hayes? My money is on Karolina, though I have nothing other than a hunch to back that up. For now, my hope is that this property is orchestrated for the screen with care. Personally, I've been waiting a long time for these characters to be represented and I'll be damned if they get the short shrift after all this time. Here's hoping for great things from this show.

Marvel and Hulu's RUNAWAYS starring Julian McMahon, Greg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Ariela Barer, Brigid Brannagh, Ever Carradine, Rhenzy Feliz, Virginia Gardner, Jaems Marsters, and Lyrica Okano will premiere on November 21st.
