Oh Mary Elizabeth Winstead…how I forever long to see you grope that flamethrower!
Speaking for many I’m sure, we’ll all get a chance to see Mary do her tough-girl impression this Friday when THE THING infiltrates theaters around the world. But before we do so, let’s hear what, in Winstead’s mind, differentiates this “prequel” from its 1982 predecessor.
Speaking with the L.A. Times, Mary first addressed the fears she felt on-set. Aside from the titular monster, the pressure of living up to John Carpenter’s version (in turn inspired by Howard Hawks’ 1951 original) took the largest hold:
“I think there was some pressure going into it knowing that we were going to be watched very closely and that if we didn’t do it justice, there was going to be a lot of anger.”
About what really drew her to the story:
“I didn’t open the script and see a bunch of retreads of the same characters that are in the first film, who are so beloved…I saw a totally new story with new characters and new dynamics.”
Continuing on that theme:
“I kind of accepted the fact that she’s not funny,” Winstead said of her character Kate. “She’s very serious.… She’s very focused, she’s very intelligent.”
And finally, about competing with the eye popping F/X from Carpenter’s film:
“It’s a real blend of practical and CGI. It’s kind of representative of the film in the sense that it’s a blend of the old and the new.”
