It’s been well over a year since I wrote anything about THE MOTH DIARIES, the vampire flick being directed by Mary Harron (AMERICAN PSYCHO). I had all but forgotten about it, but it’s looking like the flick is finally ready to get moving. ‘Bout damn time – I needs me some vampire schoolgirls!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is getting ready to shoot in and around Montreal, Canada on October 8th. In addition, two more castmembers have come aboard the project, joining the previously announced Scott Speedman and Lily Cole: Sarah Gadon (pictured right) and Sarah Bolger (pictured below). The latter was in 18 episodes of Showtime’s “The Tudors”, while the former was in ABC’s now-defunct “Happy Town”.
Here’s the juicy plot of THE MOTH DIARIES, which is based on a book by Rachel Klein: Unfolding through the journal of a sixteen-year-old girl, The Moth Diaries is a compellingly brilliant portrait of obsession and fear set in the hothouse atmosphere of a girls’ boarding school. It is a world of too many books and too little reality, where ideas become passions and passions obsessions. The unnamed narrator believes with increasing certainty that a schoolmate is a vampire, subtly and secretly killing her best friend and roommate, and responsible for an escalating series of disasters at the school. As she watches her friend’s growing relationship with Ernessa, she gradually loses her grip on reality, her paranoia fuelled by reading le Fanu’s vampiric novel Carmilla. Is Ernessa really a vampire? Or has the narrator trapped herself in her own fevered imagination?
Sounds like Grade-A cheese to me – and I like it! With Harron at the helm, I’m pretty confidant that this won’t be the usual teen vampire crap. I can hope, anyway…
