Caine: Mason Thames joins Donnie Yen in the John Wick spin-off

The John Wick franchise is getting a new spin-off: following in the footsteps of Ballerina is a movie about Caine, the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. Donnie Yen returns to the role while also stepping behind the camera to direct, and Caine: From the World of John Wick has been in production for just over two months. Now, Deadline reports that Mason Thames of the Black Phone films has signed on to join Yen in the cast. Details on the role he’ll be playing have not been revealed.

Thames was also the star of the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon and recently wrapped production on How to Train Your Dragon 2. His upcoming releases include the Green Day-inspired film Nimrods and Macon Blair’s Idiots.

Who’s in the cast of Caine?

We know little about Caine so far. However, we know that Yen and Thames will share the screen with Rina Sawayama, who made her film acting debut in John Wick: Chapter 4. Sawayama reprises her role as Akira Shimazu, who was the concierge of the Osaka Continental Hotel.

Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things is also in the cast.

What is Caine about?

There is no logline for Caine at this time, but the film is said to continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.

The screenplay is by Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale. Caine is being produced and creatively overseen by John Wick franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through their Thunder Road shingle and Chad Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner. John Wick star Keanu Reeves is producing with John Saunders. Yen also serves as an executive producer on the project, as does Courtney Brock.

Yen has said, “What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.
