Matt Reeves on Cloverfield 2: “You are going to see it.”

CLOVERFIELD 2 is one of those movies that always elicits a “if the script comes together” or “we’ve got some possible ideas” when it inevitably comes up in the midst of the first film’s creators. Truth be told, it’s probably not the most anticipated of potential sequels, but anything involving giant monsters is always going to elicit some interest from the film geek set – as is anything J.J. Abrams is a part of. Matt Reeves, while doing promo rounds for LET ME IN last year, gave a slew of “we’ll just have to see” type answers regarding CLOVERFIELD 2, but it would appear as though he’s now more confidant about the possibility.

Talking to Total Film, Reeves said this about the sequel:
“Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when [laughs].”

“At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and JJ Abrams is very much involved. However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time.”

Obviously, there’s still no greenlight on the sequel, but at the very least this indicates that the core three creative parties are still actively mulling it over.

The first CLOVERFIELD made around $170 million worldwide in 2008, a decent but not astounding sum. (Though it was certainly profitable considering its $25 million budget.) It went on to make an addition $29 million on DVD.
