Mattel & Warner Bros. to partner for a live-action Hot Wheels movie

When Universal's Fast & Furious franchise inevitably runs out of gas – several sequels from now – who will be there to take up the helm of pedal-to-the-metal mayhem on the big screen? Perhaps it's Mattel and Warner Bros, as both studios have just announced a partnership to bring gearheads the world over a live-action film based on the toy company's time-honored Hot Wheels franchise.

“We are excited to bring the thrill of a Hot Wheels live-action feature film to the big screen in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Ynon Kreiz, Mattel’s chairman and CEO, in a statement. “Mattel has great momentum as it continues to execute on our commitment to bring global audiences new ways to experience the brands they love as we transform Mattel into an IP-driven, high-performing toy company.”

When referring to Mattel's plan to bring "global audiences new ways to experience the brands they love," I believe Kreiz was talking, in-part, about the toy manufacturer's goal of releasing a live-action film featuring the iconic and fashion-forward doll, Barbie, to the silver screen. After several attempts to get the project off the ground, Mattel and Warners has landed on Alethea Jones (WHEN THE WIND CHANGES, LEMONADE STAND) as the director of BARBIE, a film that now stars Margot Robbie as the legendary blonde bombshell. For her first live-action big screen outing, Barbie is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world.

“Hot Wheels has been inspiring the imagination of kids around the world for over 50 years,” said Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros.’ chairman. “We couldn’t be more excited to be bringing the adrenaline, adventure, and excitement of Hot Wheels to the big screen.”

While some of you might argue that Hot Wheels hasn't been a hot commodity since dinosaurs … I mean people my age roamed the Earth in Masters of the Universe underoos, I'd remind you that Mattel still sells 500 million Hot Wheels brand toys a year, making it the number one selling toy in the world. With that in mind, of course Old Man Hollywood is going to try and get a piece, and now that Mattel Films has taken back control over their varying IPs, the studio is looking to make a big splash with both their nostalgic and modern day properties.
