McShane is Rising

The great Ian McShane has landed a role in the upcoming coming-of-age/horror flick THE DARK IS RISING for 20th Century Fox, and while it screams prequel to this past year’s THE COVENANT, we can only hope it’s a tad better in the quality department, especially with McShane on board.

Directed by David Cunningham, and based on Susan Cooper’s ‘The Dark Is Rising Sequence’, RISING is the story of Will Stanton, a boy whose everyday life is turned upside down when he learns that he is the last of the “Old Ones,” a group of immortal warriors who have dedicated their lives to fighting the forces of the Dark. As he uncovers a series of mysterious clues, some dating back to the founding of Britain and others going all the way back to biblical times, Will discovers that with the Dark once again rising, the future of the world rests in his hands.

Enticed yet? Sounds like it could go either way here, though generally speaking, when there are kids involved, the whole thing’s generally kind of hokey, and not as scary or as hardcore as it could be. The flick co-stars Frances Conroy and Alexander Ludwig, and is being adapted to the big screen by John Hodge (who also adapted TRAINSPOTTING).

Since McShane’s a pimp and all, I have a bit higher hopes for this one than, say, if it starred Justin Timberlake, or someone as easily laughable. McShane plays one of The Old Ones who becomes the boy’s main mentor and protector. Yay. No word on when production is set to begin, so stick around, as we’ll have more info on THE DARK IS RISING as it surfaces!
