In my experience with posters there are really two possible purposes for any particular design – either the folks at marketing want to draw the potential audience in with a gripping visual that encapsulates one of the thematic threads of the movie’s story or the struggle of its characters or something such as that, or else they want to raise awareness that a new entry in a popular franchise will soon be in theaters.

The people behind the promotional work for MEN IN BLACK III seem to have fully embraced the latter goal, which is of course fine as it definitely works to sell tickets.  But part of me is always going to wonder what could have been if they’d embraced the former instead, or even dabbled much at all in it really.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back in black this May 25th.

Plot recap: In MEN IN BLACK 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back…in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.
