Today’s LAT reports that in an unsurprising display of solidarity, famed Mexican directors Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, they of PAN’S LABYRINTH, CHILDREN OF MEN and BABEL respectively, are shopping around an unprecedented all-or-nothing five picture deal to Hollywood studios worth upwards of one hundred million dollars. Under the terms of the deal, not only would each filmmaker write and direct a film but two lesser known Hispanic directors, Cuaron’s brother Carlos Cuaron, who co-wrote Cuaron’s break-out hit Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, and Rodrigo Garcia, a TV director who directed Sony’s upcoming drama PASSENGERS and who’s the son of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel García Márquez, would also each be making a film. What’s more, Carlos Cuaron’s film, a soccer drama titled RUDO Y CURSI, would mark his feature directorial debut and likely be in Spanish. Currently, Universal seems to be the front runner to take the deal in the hope of using the directors’ international clout to boost their international division.
The most confounding thing about this, as the LAT article mentions, is not the clout these directors hold and confident audacity they have that would prompt them to even think of such a deal but, considering they’re all repped by different agencies, the inter-agency collaboration at play here to make this deal happen.
