Michael Bay on Transformers 4: “We’ve redesigned everything”

This news falls into three different categorizes depending on who you are: good, bad, or meh. I’m firmly in the “meh” group. I’m not a huge fan of the series but I’m also not one that rips on Michael Bay for everything he touches. The first BAD BOYS I enjoy and I actually don’t think THE ISLAND is a complete train wreck.

Forbes has a new interview with the director and when asked about TRANSFORMERS 4 he dropped a couple of hints of what to expect from the new trilogy.

On how TRANSFORMERS 4 will be different from its predecessors: We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast.

When asked if this was a reboot Michael Bay goes on to say, No, that’s wrong. We keep the Transformers the way they were, it’s just four years later. There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go.

A lot of this smells like they’re trying to boost toy sales, but I can’t be completely cynical right? Actually, yes I can. While I think TRANSFORMERS 4 will still make a ton of money a lot of the cash earned isn’t coming from the fans who grew up with the cartoon series or original toys. It’s from people that are fans of the movie and everything else that may have come before the films isn’t as important to them. They may have known of the show and had a couple of Optimus Prime action figures, but they weren’t necessarily FANS of Transformers. I hope that the reasons for the “redesign” in the film is something that is used to advance the storyline and not just a marketing ploy.

Filming is tentatively schedule for April of this year.
