Michael Dougherty gives an update on the state of the Trick ‘r Treat sequel

Despite sitting on a shelf for a couple of years, Michael Dougherty's TRICK 'R TREAT went on to develop a very loyal (and still growing) following and Dougherty himself announced that a sequel was in the works several years ago. Unfortunately there hasn't been nearly as much movement on the sequel as I would have hoped, but Dougherty spoke with /Film recently to give an update on just where they're at.

I’m going to speak carefully about that [Laughs], because the moment I utter a word about the sequel, everybody starts salivating. It is very much my intention to make the sequel. Legendary is very committed to making the movie. Creatively, it’s in process. When it actually happens, I don’t know. But, hopefully, stuff like this — the digital decorations, the comic books, the merchandise, and what have you — will tide people over and I can finally get around to making it. Nothing would make me happier than returning to that universe. Like, I miss Sam. When we were shooting these vignettes, I was getting a little bit emotional because I would love nothing more than to hang out with Sam again for a year or two, bringing him back to the big screen.

Since discovering TRICK 'R TREAT for myself once it was released on Blu-ray, the horror anthology film has since become a part of my annual Halloween tradition, so it's a little disappointing to hear that the sequel isn't as far along as we hoped, but knowing that both Michael Dougherty and Legendary Pictures are still very much committed to continuing the franchise is good to hear. Dougherty even has his fingers crossed that TRICK 'R TREAT will become a trilogy which could explore how different locations celebrate the holiday, as well as different time periods. "I don't see why we should be limited to just present day stories," said Dougherty. "Halloween is an amazing holiday because it evolves depending on where you live and the time period."

What type of stories/monsters would you like to see in the TRICK 'R TREAT sequel?
