Michael Fassbender takes a leap of faith in Assassin’s Creed clip

The marketing department working on 20th Century Fox's upcoming video game adaptation ASSASSIN'S CREED seems to be particularly fascinated with a moment in which the lead character, played by Michael Fassbender, leaps off a high structure – there was even a poster featuring a version of the character's fall. Maybe I just don't get it because I've never played the video games.

A newly released clip shows us the build-up to this "leap of faith", a build-up that includes some fighting and a foot chase through a city in the distant past.

Directed by Justin Kurzel from a screenplay by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper, and Bill Collage, ASSASSIN'S CREED tells the following story:

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Fassbender's co-stars include Marion Cotillard, Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons, Ariane Labed, and Brendan Gleeson.

Since I know nothing about the games, I had no idea how this "experiencing an ancestor's adventures" thing worked, and was surprised to see in this clip that Callum sort of seems to be piloting his ancestor's body from the present day, basically playing a flesh and blood video game himself. That idea isn't as TRANCERS as I expected.

ASSASSIN'S CREED will leap onto theatre screens on December 21st.
