Mark Wahlberg thriller Mile 22 secures summer release date

Director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have had a pretty solid string of movies together, including LONE SURVIVOR, DEEPWATER HORIZON and PATRIOTS DAY. We will get to see if they can keep the good times chugging with their latest movie – MILE 22 – which has just snagged a prime summer release date of July 20.

The action-thriller stars Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan (THE WALKING DEAD), Ronda Rousey (FURIOUS 7), and Iko Uwais (THE RAID) and is about an American intelligence officer who teams with a special covert unit to smuggle a police officer with important info out of the country. The movie will go against non-action movie MAMMA MIA 2 at the box office, all before battling MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT the next week.

The movie is being released through STX Films, and should the movie be a success, the studio hopes it will kick off a franchise, with Wahlberg and Berg looking to do a trilogy of movies. Berg has been documenting the movie’s production on his Instagram page, and one of his most recent posts indicated principal photography wrapped yesterday.

A July release is a short distance away for a movie that just wrapped shooting, as the movie still needs to be put together and marketed. But, the team of Berg and Wahlberg did put out two movies in 2016 within a few months of each other – DEEPWATER HORIZON and PATRIOT’S DAY – and both were critically acclaimed. Berg seems to work fast and deliver the goods, and chances are this will be another great entry in the duo’s reliable canon of films. God, why couldn’t Berg have done TRANSFORMERS 5?

MILE 22 hits theaters July 20.
