We got a heads up today on this super-indie flick called MORBID: A LOVE STORY. Now the first thing to come to mind was the dark comedy WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY, but alas, MORBID has nothing at all to do with WRISTCUTTERS… shame too because I really dug WRISTCUTTERS.
Anyway, MORBID is more along the lines of a serial killer flick… actually that’s exactly what it is! An in depth serial killer flick. Here’s the lengthly synopsis for you all:
Christian is a typical college student besides the fact that he is a serial killer. He sees death as the greatest art form, ranking his targets by degree of difficulty and making his victims his easel. Christian takes a liking to Belle a girl in his class and falls in love. He decides he wants to lead a normal life and stop his killing ways, but old habits die hard.
Meanwhile, F.B.I. agent Jack Stevenson who was assigned to Christian’s case three years earlier has grown distant to his family due to the demands of the case. He feels guilty when his family dies in car accident caused by a man falling asleep at the wheel. Jack feels the man deserves to die and battles fantasies of murdering the man himself as a way to make amends with his loved ones. When he finally tracks down Christian, he has a new plan.
Although there is plenty of blood and gore, the film is different from a typical run of the mill slasher film because the serial killer is the protagonist. The role of hero and villain change throughout the film, making the viewer question right, wrong and his or her own morality. The film’s overall message is that love heals even the deepest scars and makes you question whether doing bad things for the right reasons is justifiable.
Actually sounds halfway decent right? I’ve expressed my interest in serial killer flicks many a times, so it’s no surprise this one caught my eye… then I watched the trailer and got hit with the cheapest form of deja vu imaginable. Check out the trailer over in our videos section or just click away below to see if you can catch what I’m talking about it…
In case you couldn’t, I’m talking about the heavy similarity MORBID has to another serial killer flick… quite possibly the greatest serial killer flick ever. I’m talking of course about AMERICAN PSYCHO. It’s obvious PSYCHO was a major inspiration for MORBID, major. But hell… AMERICAN PSYCHO rocked hard! And MORBID is adding this whole other layer to the story by throwing in the ‘A LOVE STORY’ part, so I’m down… plus the chick is hot!
Along with the trailer we also scored the poster (above) and some stills from the flick… a few of them are actually pretty gruesome too. Just scroll down to check those out.
The flick is written and directed by Edward Payson with the cast including: Liam J. Smith, Chris Vanderhorst, Anna Palestis (the hottie), Dylan Voorhees, Lindy Journey, Scott Naurath, and Amber Plaster. Check out the flick’s MySpace right over here. Looks like MORBID: A LOVE STORY is going to be making the festival rounds later this year, looking at a 2009 DVD release.
