Well looks like New Line isn’t letting Mr. Englund in the know seeing how the internet is an electric buzz right now with some of the biggest horror news we’ve heard in a while. New Line has gone to Platinum Dunes to reboot the NIGHTMARE franchise.
Oh god what has happened. The Platinum Dunes group of Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form have been chosen to set up a new franchise for Freddy Krueger.
Platinum Dunes needs to calm down. They’re addicted to remakes/reimaginings: THE HITCHER and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE were a couple of the first casualities, with THE BIRDS, NEAR DARK, and FRIDAY THE 13TH all lined up on the chopping block. Now A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET? Why?!
If nothing has the potential to get genre fans in a rage about all this remake nonsense, this definately does. For years there’s been rumors about what’s next for Freddy. Will he be battiling with Jason again? With maybe Ash or Michael Myers thrown in the mix? Or maybe we’ll get a look at how Mr. Krueger began his horrific reeign, before he became the dream demon we’ve all grown to love. Even a general continuation of the franchise has been mixed around.
If there’s any silver lining to this, it’s that this isn’t technically a ‘remake.’ Much like the new FRIDAY THE 13TH, it’s described as being a new franchise based off the original A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, so it sounds like maybe a fresh batch of sequels… which maybe… maybe won’t be so bad. They’ve got to get Robert Englund in on it though, without Englund, there is no Freddy. Plus they’re going to have to wait until after the writer’s strike to hire someone to write this thing anyway.
