What am I talking about? Well the guys over at Bloody-Disgusting recently chatted it up with X-FILES writer/producer Frank Spotnitz, who hopes they can still get a third film made. Here’s what he said in regards to the possibility of a third film:
“I think there very well could be more in the future. The studio has not indicated another one yet, but there certainly is an audience for it. I think what happened this past summer was a function of bad luck and bad timing with the release. These movies cost a lot of money, not just to make but to market them as well. When the studio looks at the sales of the DVD that’s when they will really decide to see if its worth risking. There is still a lot of love with 20th Century Fox, as well as with the fans.”
Considering I WANT TO BELIEVE took years to get off the ground, through rights battles and creative differences it just didn’t seem like the second X-FILES film was going to see the light of day. Now that it finally did, and it tanked, I’m going to go ahead and assume the chances on a third are slim to none. Then again, like Spotnitz says, it all depends on the DVD sales I guess.
Spotniz goes on to talk about what he’d like the third film to be about (Alien Colonization), what’s next for him, and whether or not David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson (below) would be up for returning yet again. He seems optomisitc about the stars jumping on board but I can’t see Duchovny jumping back on a rocking boat when he’s scoring success elsewhere (CALIFORNICATION). Time will tell I guess.
