It wasn't too long ago that we got our first-ever videogame movie adaptation with the 1993 release of Super Mario Bros. After its failure, the industry tried its hands in the fighting genre with Double Dragon and Street Fighter, which, of course, both failed, creating the dreaded "Video Game Curse." You can argue that the curse is still prevalent to this day and that Hollywood hasn't quite been able to figure out the winning formula, but do you know which movie was the first and among the very few actually to break it? That's right, Paul W.S. Anderson's Mortal Kombat (WATCH IT HERE – OWN IT HERE). With the brand new trailer launching for Mortal Kombat 2021 (WATCH IT HERE), starring Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Lewis Tan, we thought, what better time to dive into the early days of the video game movie boom with the1995 classic, Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat was the first video game adaption to give enough fan service to the source material while also expanding the story interestingly and organically. It was colorful, ambitious, and surprisingly funny; Anderson tied everything around a perfect cast lead by the great Robin Shou. Yet, Mr. Connor MacLeod himself, Christopher Lambert, lent the production maturity and star power to help the new director implement his vision with confidence, delivering the campy classic we have today. Though this does have a loyal fanbase, It also has an upsettingly low IMDB score of 5.8 and a 48% Rotten Tomatoes.
