2026 has already been a landmark year for video game movies. Following Return to Silent Hill and Super Mario Bros. Galaxy, Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat II hit theaters in May, delivering what many fans—including us here at JoBlo—felt was a major improvement over the divisive 2021 reboot.
Now available on VOD ahead of its July 28 4K Blu-ray release, Mortal Kombat II could still have plenty of life left in it—and perhaps the franchise does too.
Warner Bros. invited JoBlo to speak with director Simon McQuoid about the film’s home video release, and naturally we had to ask the question every fan is thinking:
McQuoid wouldn’t confirm another sequel just yet, but he certainly didn’t rule it out.
“I think the lifecycle of this film needs to totally play out before anything could be stated officially. So I would say, wait and see.”
While that’s far from an announcement, it’s hardly a denial either, suggesting Warner Bros. is waiting to see how Mortal Kombat II performs across home entertainment before making its next move.
Our conversation wasn’t limited to the movies. We also asked McQuoid about his personal “Mount Rushmore” of Mortal Kombat characters, his favorite game in the franchise, and what excites him most about the series going forward.
Interestingly, he also hinted that NetherRealm’s next game—widely expected to be Mortal Kombat 13—could have fans excited.
“From the little bits that Ed’s told me of what’s coming up, it’s very exciting what they’ve got. I can’t divulge anything—that would be wrong of me—but what they’re cooking up is pretty exciting. I think the next thing they do is going to be quite exciting.”
While McQuoid stopped well short of confirming any details, his comments suggest exciting things may be on the horizon for both the film and gaming sides of the franchise.
As someone who’s been playing Mortal Kombat since the original arcade game in 1992, I went into Mortal Kombat IIwith my claws sharpened—much like Baraka—after being disappointed by the 2021 movie. While it wasn’t a flawless victory, it delivered the bloody action and fan service I was hoping for, and I’d certainly like to see this version of the franchise continue.
