Ryan Reynolds unveils “The Canadian Voice” of Detective Pikachu

In this week’s upcoming summer blockbuster POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU actor Ryan Reynolds lends his smooth pipes to the electric, yellow and adorable Pokémon detective. While other actors may come in for dubbed international versions (Hidetoshi Nishijima in Japan), Reynolds will, in fact, be doing double duty as both the English-language and the subtly different, and much more polite Canadian version. If you listen closely you can hear the difference, but as evidenced by a new promo the Reynolds we know and love isn’t quite too fond of this poutine-loving counterpart.

Reynolds shared a post on Instagram with a posting reading, “A big thank you to all the local language talent lending their voices to #DetectivePickachu. Except for one…” It's after Reynold’s little intro that a doppelganger Reynold’s appeared, saying he was “The Canadian Voice” of Pikachu, who speaks a more measured English and fluent French. This is definitely the Pikachu you want for a neighbor to borrow a cup of maple syrup from.

Perhaps even funnier than the video is the comment left by fellow actor Dwayne Johnson, who wrote “Im gonna hire Canadian Ryan “Pikachu” Reynolds to drink tequila with me and talk dirty.” Now, I don’t know what plans they have for the sequel, but this doesn’t sound all that bad an idea.

English, nicer English or French, it doesn't really matter. The general appearance of Pikachu alone will get rears in the cushion seats, and the movie is poised to possibly take down AVENGERS: ENDGAME this weekend at the box office. The reviews are currently solid with 72% on Rotten Tomatoes (read ours here), making it the best-reviewed video game movie of all time by a solid margin. Now, let's talk about the Danny DeVito-language version of the movie in Finland.
