We may have seen the last of HBO's True Detective

Not too long ago, HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE took the world by storm, offering up tremendous performances by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey amidst all the speculation about the Yellow King and Carcosa and putting the new dramatic anthology on the map in a big way. And then the second season happened. While it looked good on paper with a cast of Colin Farell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn, and eventually picked up towards the last episodes, it was nowhere near as well received as its predecessor. In fact, a lot of fans felt letdown after Season One set such a high bar, which sometimes does happen. (Sorry, but they can't all be winners.)

Interest in a Season Three has been nearly non-existent from anyone who was at one time or another a fan of the show, and, as a result, the fate of the show hasn't really come up...

Until now.

HBO is undergoing a bit of a shake-up at the top of their operation, with HBO's longtime programming head Michael Lombardo recently stepping down and the cable network's former comedy chief Casey Bloys being appointed to replace him. There are a number of decisions he faces about the future direction of HBO, particularly the network's original series - some easier than others... But in a new profile about Bloys, The Hollywood Reporter may have revealed the latest thinking on where TRUE DETECTIVE is headed.

While juggernaut Game of Thrones and the final season of Damon Lindelof's Peabody-winning drama The Leftovers shouldn't require too much of Bloys' time, other decisions, including the fate of True Detective, now fall to him. (HBO sources suggest a new project from creator Nic Pizzolatto is more likely.)

TRUE DETECTIVE sounds pretty dead to me. Now it is entirely possible that TRUE DETECTIVE could be handed off to someone else, bringing a fresh voice and new ideas into the mix after the disappointing Season Two, with Pizzolatto moving onto greener pastures... Or maybe a revival of the series just isn't in the cards, and we'll just have to remember how good TRUE DETECTIVE was in its maiden voyage before it made way for other series to fill its void.
