Have you ever wished that you could alter your memory to watch your favorite movies again for the first time? Well, you might get your chance! No, seriously, check this out. According to a report shared by KFC Barstool on Instagram, a Dutch movie theater is offering a hypnosis experience for 30 filmgoers to help them forget their favorite movie so they can watch it again for the first time.
Forget Everything You Know (Literally)
The participants will work with world-renowned hypnotist Victor Kramer for the experiment. The setup includes a one-to-one online session with Kramer, followed by an in-person group session at the theater ahead of the screening. The group will then pick one of four movies to try and rewatch for the first time.
Mind Games & Masterpieces
The four movies chosen for the experiment include Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the Wachowskis’ sci-fi classic The Matrix, Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (for some reason), and David Fincher’s disturbing 1995 thriller Se7en. The participants will decide which movie to watch ahead of the November 9 screening, and hope their brains aren’t turned into soup in the process.
How Does Hypnotic Amnesia Actually Work?
How will this experience be achieved? The crowd will engage in hypnotic amnesia with Victor Kramer, a process that supposedly temporarily makes you forget specific details for a small window of time, making it theoretically possible to enjoy a movie you’ve already seen as if you’re watching it for the first time. To be clear, it doesn’t erase the entire film from your brain, but it helps you omit specific details, like plot twists.
The One Movie I’d Wipe From My Memory
This begs the question: What movies or television shows would you choose to forget as part of a hypnotic amnesia experiment? I would love to see Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas again for the first time. I went into that movie completely sober and felt high as a kite by the time I left the theater. I needed to hang out in my car for 20 minutes before I felt comfortable enough to drive anywhere. Before that, I never thought a movie could affect me on such a psychological and physical level. It was wild!
