Mutants picked up

Comedic spins might just be all the rage these days, as we just heard about the FRANKENSTEIN romantic comedy FRANK (over HERE), and now we have another horrorific comedy coming our way… without the romantic twist.

According to Variety, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have picked up “GO MUTANTS!”, based on the upcoming novel by Larry Doyle. So what’s this shit about? Check it:

“Go Mutants!” is a teen comedy/adventure set in a high school where all of the tropes from classic 1950s alien invasion movies came true. Years later, the children of those mutant creatures have assimilated among the other kids.

Now what the hell does this mean? Apparently we can expect to see appearances from the likes of Gort from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and the creature from THE CREATURE FROM THE BLUE LAGOON. I’m sure there will be more than that, but those two are the only bones they’re giving up right now.

I like the concept of a world where all the alien invasion / creature features from the 50s were really true and that we live in a world where there are a ton of mutants and whatnot living amongst the rest of us. But a teen comedy version of it? Ugh… I dunno, man. It might be cool, but I have a feeling it’ll be a little less than spectacular.

Doyle’s wriing the script based on his book (so at least there’s that), and the great Brian Grazer is producing. Stick around for more on “GO MUTANTS!” as we hear it!
