One flick I think we can all agree on wanting to see, in our out of genre, is Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN. Not only is it the director’s first flick since rebuilding Mickey Rourke’s career in THE WRESTLER, it also bridges the unbridled heat of Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis (not to mention Winona Ryder). It’s safe to say that, even for a flick about the hardened world of ballet, some merit will be seen come December 1st.
Now that I’ve successfully buried the lead, let’s get to it. Star Natalie Portman caught up with MTV and spoke a bit about BLACK SWAN, specifically citing its tone being redolent of ROSEMARY’S BABY. Check it…
“It’s very unique in tone,” Portman told MTV News, adding “I think of it more as a psychological thriller, like ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ in [terms of] genre, if I had to pick a genre.” “We’re really excited about [the movie], we just found out that we’re opening [the Venice Film Festival.]”
Okay, what this tells me is Aronofsky is more interested in storytelling than actual cheap thrills and scares. ROSEMARY’S BABY plays more like a morbid drama than an assaulting horror flick, with characters as explored as the premise itself. If this holds, I’m even more excited to see BLACK SWAN!
