Necromania Releases

Here’s one from the history books, kids. Literally. You know our dear departed Ed Wood, master of cornball classics like PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, well it turns out he’s a prophet. You can find all the evidence you need by checking out the DVD release of his last film, NECROMANIA from Fleshbot. Are you excited, ‘cause I am. It’s a simple little tale, of a boy and a girl whose sex life ain’t so grand. So what do they do? Go to a coven of witches for advice and…other stuff. I know that’s what I’d do.

So why is Wood a prophet you ask? Well think about a little movie called SAMHAIN that we’re all dying to sink our teeth into – horror, porn stars, cheesy actors (sorry Grieco) – its all the same damn ingredients my friends. The only difference, outside of the fact that Christian Viel knows how to direct a movie, is that NECROMANIA goes all the way. XXX baby! Hardcore horror porn! Now, is it actually scary? Guess that all depends on Wood’s intent. If he wanted to bring chills, chances are he failed. But the point is he tried. He wasn’t good at genre work, but he kept doing it, even bringing Bela Lugosi back from retirement. Gotta give the dude props for that. Plus, you want guaranteed horror, well this is 70’s hardcore. Check out the bikini lines (if you can find them), and I’m sure you’ll have all the chills and thrills you need.

So let’s all take a moment to acknowledge the master (of what I’m admittedly not sure) and thank the genre gods for sacrificing our brains with this delightful piece of previously unavailable trash. Or as Wood Biographer Rudy Grey puts it, describing an orgy scene from the film:

“Taking into account the context and the tone of the rest of the movie, it may be the most remarkable sequence in the history of film.”

Now who could argue with that?
