Nekrokosm: Mandy’s Panos Cosmatos to direct phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare for A24

Four years have already gone by since the release of Mandy, which instantly became a cult favorite, and now we finally know what director Panos Cosmatos is going to do next. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Cosmatos is teaming up with A24 and XYZ Films to bring us a science fiction fantasy film called Nekrokosm.

Details are being kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter was able to dig up the information that Nekrokosm is described as being a “phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare” and is

set deep within a strange galaxy where two lovers are torn apart as they try to survive a malevolent invasion.

Cosmatos crafted the story with Maegan Houang, who is now writing the screenplay. Houang was a staff writer on the second season of the Starz series Counterpart, which dealt with “a gateway to a parallel dimension”.

A24 will be producing Nekrokosm alongside Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films. A24 is also financing the project and will handle the worldwide distribution. This marks the first time Cosmatos has worked with A24, but XYZ Films was involved with both Mandy and his feature debut Beyond the Black Rainbow.

Since making Mandy, Cosmatos directed an episode of the Guillermo del Toro anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix. That show is currently in post-production.

There’s not much to go on to build hype for Nekrokosm at the moment, but I’m sure many fans of Beyond the Black Rainbow and/or Mandy were already sold on the project as soon as they heard Cosmatos would be directing a “phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare”.

I can’t exactly say I’m a fan of his work, I couldn’t get into Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy didn’t work as well for me as I hoped it would, but I definitely respect what Cosmatos did with those movies and I’m glad to see he’s going to continue doing his thing.

Are you a Panos Cosmatos fan? How does Nekrokosm sound to you at this point? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
