Netflix says they have no plans to develop a wrap-up movie for The OA

Back when Netflix cancelled SENSE8 – the globe-trotting sci-fi spectacle from creators J. Michael Straczyski and the The Wachowskis – fans of the all-inclusive series banded together to make damn certain that the series got a proper ending. After mounting a most-impressive movement across social media to get the show renewed, the streamer granted Lana Wachowski a two-hour special meant to serve as an extended series finale. In time, the wrap-up served as a life-affirming and proper end to the emotionally-charged series, complete with an opportunity to revisit the concept down the road.

Unfortunately for fans of THE OA, Netflix has recently stated that the series will not be given a wrap-up movie to end the show once and for all.

The series created by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij lasted for two seasons before coming to a close with one hell of a cliffhanger ending. Understandably, fans of the show are furious that THE OA was cancelled, which makes the news of there being no follow-up film sting all the more.

Marling posted a message to fans last weekend about Team OA's efforts to end the show on a proper note:

“We’re humbled, to be honest floored, by the outpouring of support for The OA,” Marling wrote. “Your words and images move us deeply. Not because the show must continue, but because for some people its unexpected cancellation begs larger questions about the role of storytelling and its fate inside late capitalism’s push toward consolidation and economies of scale …  The other day [The OAshowrunner] Zal [Batmanglij] and I pulled over to offer a bottle of water and food to a young woman who has been protesting the cancelation of the show on a street corner in Hollywood,” Marling said of Young. “As we were leaving she said, ‘You know, what I’m really protesting is late capitalism.’ And then she said something that I haven’t been able to forget since: ‘Algorithms aren’t as smart as we are. They cannot account for love.’ Her words. Not mine. And the story keeps going inside them.”

Sadly, after speaking with Netflix about revisiting the series for one final go, talks broke down and the cast were officially released from their contracts.

It sounds like it's time to grab a beverage of your choice and pour one out for THE OA, my friends. It truly is a bummer that the show will not be getting a satisfying conclusion. I suppose we'll just have to use our imaginations when coming to grips with how it might have ended.
