Netflix to get psychological when they host Freud, a serial killer thriller

Stop me if you've heard this one: Sigmund Freud, a medium, a cop, and a serial killer with deep-rooted familial issues walk into a bar.

It's been announced that Netflix has booked some time on the couch with FREUD, an upcoming Austrian thriller series that imagines the young psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud using his groundbreaking techniques to track a serial killer in 19th century Vienna.

As a part of the pick-up, the mega-popular streaming network will host FREUD internationally outside of Austria, Belgium, Finland and Hungary. The eight-part series hails from Austria's public broadcaster ORF and is expected to go into production this fall.

When FREUD reaches the airwaves, it will depict the founding father of psychoanalysis teaming up with a medium and a local cop to track a serial killer wreaking havoc in Vienna. The upcoming series comes to us from Marvin Kren, the talent behind TNT's German series 4 BLOCKS. Kren is set to direct the project in addition to co-writing the program alongside Stefan Brunner and Benjamin Hessler. Heinrich Ambrosch will executive produce the serialized thriller for Austria's Satel Film and Moritz Polter for Bavaria Fiction in Germany.

In the past, Netflix has found great success with their other Austria-brand series, DARK. a critically-acclaimed sci-fi drama from creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. For those of you who have yet to check out DARK, I highly recommend it. It's family saga with a supernatural twist, set in a German town, where the disappearance of two young children exposes the relationships among four families. Before long, time and reality itself start to bend around them, which leads all involved to a startling revelation. The show is now in the process of prepping for its second season.
