New Bright trailer teases an epic battle for a magic wand

Next weekend STAR WARS will still be raking in the dough at the box office, but if you don’t want to deal with all the crowds (or you’ve already seen it 10 times) you can still get your sci-fi-action fix be staying home and watching the Netflix original movie, BRIGHT, from director David Ayer (SUICIDE SQUAD). Starring Will Smith as a human cop and Joel Edgerton as his Orc partner, BRIGHT takes place in a world where fantasy and reality are one, and where a deadly, magic wand threatens to send the world into chaos. The battle for the magic device is on in the new trailer, which features a ton of cop-fantasy action and Noomi Rapace’s ass-kicking elf character, Leilah.

I have a feeling that the movie, despite how awesome it looks, would not fare as well in theaters. The fantasy element doesn’t always sell to people and given the movie’s big budget that would be a problem. But Netflix is a nice home for it and seems like something more than enough people will stream for free. Rapace looks amazing in it, and the chemistry between Smith and Edgerton reminds me of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena’s bond in END OF WATCH. That sells it for me, so next Friday my butt will be planted firmly on the couch, watching Smith squash fairies.

BRIGHT hits Netflix December 22.
