New details on 70mm IMAX screenings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

New details have emerged surrounding the IMAX roll-out of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and they are especially exciting for those of us nearby a true IMAX screen. Making Star Wars got the inside scoop on the specifications for the screenings of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS when it debuts this Christmas on the premium IMAX format. But, the caveat is that only certain types of IMAX screens will show the full presentation as J.J. Abrams intended it.

From the details, it looks like the massive sequence shot in IMAX will be those in the teaser on the planet of Jakku. While it is unknown if this is the lone 70mm part of the film, it will be the longest centerpiece for the format. Check out some of the new details below.

The theaters that house a “true” eight story tall IMAX screen will present the film in actual 70MM film reel; presenting the 70MM shot scenes in its full screen glory.

There will be two 70MM prints running through the IMAX projector to have the film play in IMAX 3D; rest assured it’s not the gimmick post converted 3D. It’s what IMAX was founded on, showcasing the best and most immersive 3D ever.

The 70MM IMAX presentation will not play at the “gimmick” shrunk IMAX theaters. Those will showcase the standard Digital IMAX converted format.

So there you have it. Most movie theaters across the country have been fitted with "IMAX" screens which are really just larger movie screens rather than the true IMAX theaters housing eight story projection screens. I have seen movies in both formats and nothing can compete with a real IMAX experience. If the comparison images below are any indication, it looks like the longest lines for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS may be at these limited locations.
