Gotta go fast! Gameplay footage released for retro 2D platformer Sonic Mania

I used to love Sonic as a kid. In fact, I still think he's a better mascot than Mario (but I'm aware I'm in the minority). Unfortunately, it's been hard being a fan of Sonic, as for the last decade his games have been either bad, or some of the worst ever. Not to mention the fandom that wants him to be pregnant all the time.

But there's hope! SONIC MANIA, announced at the 25th anniversary event held by Sega at the San Diego Comic-Con event last year, is a sprite based 2D platformer "presented in the same style of the Sonic games released for the Sega Genesis and its add-ons…[and] features original levels alongside 'remixed' levels from past games, such as Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog."

Gameplay footage for the upcoming SONIC MANIA was released at PAX East 2017 (which also premiered the FRIDAY THE 13TH trailer). Let's take a look:

Well, that certainly looks like footage from the old Sega Genesis games all right. I used to play these games all the goddamn time, and my nostalgia senses are going off the fuckin' charts! From the sound effects, to the movement, to the environments…it's like I traveled back in time to the '90s. All I need left is my ironic Hot Topic black tee and my Nine Inch Nails CDs. Let's just hope the rest of the game holds up.

Either way, SONIC MANIA will go fast to consoles May 30th, 2017.
