New pic from The Strain flies the deadly skies

Last week brought us the first images from Guillermo del Toro’s FX series “The Strain”, which were kind of cool but not exactly electrifying. Today’s new photo, however, gives us something a bit creepier.

As you can see, the fresh still shows us a pilot who has clearly eaten some bad airplane grub. Or worse. (Probably worse.)

The plot:

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The series, which premieres in the summer, was recently previewed at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, and the buzz is good. Here’s what showrunner Carlton Cuse (who also runs “Bates Motel”) had to say about the show’s antagonists:

“You’ll never look at vampires the same way. These are not sparkly, brooding dudes with fangs and romantic problems… These vampires, or to use the Romanian word, tragoi, are really scary creatures… These creatures, as imagined by Guillermo, I believe are really compelling, interesting and different than what you’ve seen before… Not unlike Pan’s Labyrinth, Guillermo has brought a real vision to the way these creatures have been realized that I think audiences will find compelling.”

Starring Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Roger Cross, Leslie Hope, Regina King, Robert Maillet, Lauren Lee Smith, Miguel Gomez, Kevin Durand, David Bradley, and Richard Sammel, “The Strain” debuts in July.
