New Slender Man trailer finds the creepy internet meme terrifying teens

All manner of unsettling creatures and characters have been featured in horror movies, including leprechauns, soaking wet demon girls and, of course, clowns. But few of them have such a strong place in the current pop culture (okay, clowns will always be haunting) as Slender Man. After going viral with memes, fan fiction, and video games the creepy, skinny, faceless figure is getting his own major movie from Sony, and the new trailer is here proving nothing scares teens more than internet memes and black goo.

Directed by Sylvain White (THE AMERICANS, THE LOSERS), the movie centers on three girls (Joey King, Jaz Sinclair, and Julia Goldani Telles) as they try to find their friend (Annalise Basso) who goes missing after the four perform a ritual to prove the Slender Man thing is a bunch of malarkey. Turns out he may be real after all, and the girls then find themselves hunted by Slender Man, cursed with visions of overly tall men with bony fingers.

My first introduction to Slender Man was the PC game “Slender: The Eight Pages” which has you wander the woods at night looking for eight pages with Slender following you around. That was a nightmarish experience. This, on the other hand, looks like it will be a perfectly creepy night out for teens looking to cram the movie theater on opening night. The movie reminds me of flicks like THE RING, THE GRUDGE, or any appropriate knock-off, of which there will always be a market for.

SLENDER MAN hits theaters August 10.
