THE AWAKENING is a film we haven’t heard a whole lot from since we showed you its promo poster in May of 2010. The supernatural thriller, set in the 1920s, has a very good cast, including Rebecca Hall (THE TOWN), Dominic West (“The Wire”) and Imelda Staunton (HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX), so it’s a mystery why we haven’t heard more about it. However, thanks to the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, the movie is back on our radar, as it’s set to have its world premiere there next month.
To help get you prepped for THE AWAKENING, we’ve landed a new synopsis for the movie, as well as an image of the ethereal Ms. Hall. No, you’re not going to learn much about the movie from the still, but it’s quite nice to look at, don’t you think? (As is the additional photo I’ve attached for your viewing pleasure!)
Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence Cathcart is on a mission to expose all séances as exploitative shams. However, when she is called to a boys’ boarding school to investigate a case of the uncanny, she is gradually forced to confront her skepticism in the most terrifying way, shaking her scientific convictions and her sense of self to the very core. Haunting and moving in equal measure, The Awakening is a sophisticated psychological/supernatural thriller in the tradition of The Others and The Orphanage, but with its own unique and thrilling twist.
THE AWAKENING was directed by Nick Murphy and written by Stephen Volk (THE GUARDIAN) and Murphy. It hits theaters in the UK on NOVEMBER 11th; no word on when it might come to the US.
