New trailer for Son of God from The Bible mini-series producer’s Mark Burnett and Roma Downey

After the massive success of The Bible TV miniseries from producer's Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the plans were set in motion to expand the New Testament portion of the story into a feature film, with additional footage being added. Now, Twentieth Century Fox has picked up distribution for the film, which will get a theatrical release in February. The promotional campaign for the film has kicked off with a trailer and poster for the film, which follows the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Here's the trailer:

Here's the synopsis:

This major motion picture event — an experience created to be shared among families and communities across the U.S. — brings the story of Jesus’ life to audiences through compelling cinematic storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational.  Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, the film features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects and a rich orchestral score from Oscar®-winner Hans Zimmer.  Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado portrays the role of Jesus as the film spans from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection

I grew up watching JESUS OF NAZARETH as a kid and was always fascinated by the story of Jesus. Whether you're religious or not, the story is still a compelling one, like most stories of religious figures of any religion. Either way, it'll always be a touchy subject and I'm interested to see how this plays out theatrically. Although The Bible mini-series was a success, this "repackaging" is a bit of a gamble, so the end result of it's box office run will be very telling.

SON OF GOD hits theaters on February 28, 2014.
