Nicholas Hoult joins Harry Potter season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart

Deadline reports that Nicholas Hoult has joined the cast of the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter TV series as Gilderoy Lockhart, the notoriously vain wizard played by Kenneth Branagh in the movies.

Gilderoy Lockhart

Lockhart was a major character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, on which the second season will be based. He’s introduced as the new Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, but it quickly becomes apparent (to Harry at least) that he’s all talk. Obsessed with fame, Lockhart was a five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award, and also wrote many books on dark creatures. But in reality, he actually used his memory charm (the one thing he was good at) to take credit for the accomplishments of other wizards.

I think Hoult will be a good fit for this character. I’m imagining his take being similar to his Emperor Peter III from The Great, only with less profanity and vulgarity. I loved that show.

Harry Potter TV Series

The second season of Harry Potter is slated to start shooting this fall. In addition to Hoult as Lockhart, the new season will feature the return of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall.

The first season, which is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will debut on HBO on December 25.

Each season of the series is said to cover one of J.K. Rowling’s novels, for a total of seven seasons. Last year, HBO released a statement saying, “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.“

I’m curious to see how this will be received. The franchise’s popularity has certainly diminished over the years, and while I have no doubt the series will be successful, I do wonder whether it has any hope of matching the magic of the original movies.
