Nicolas Winding Refn’s next remake? Witchfinder General

Nicolas Winding Refn just landed funding for his remake of 1988's MANIAC COP, but he's not stopping there. The NEON DEMON director has already launched into producing another retro flick reboot, this time the 1968 cult classic WITCHFINDER GENERAL (aka THE CONQUEROR WORM) starring Vincent Price.

Refn will be teaming with UK producer Rupert Preston on the project, and they are currently on the hunt for writers and directors. They have not yet decided whether to contemporize the picture or keep it a period piece. Knowing Refn, it'll end up set in the 80's. Imagine that soundtrack.

Here's the plot of the original film, directed by Michael Reeves:

A disturbing tale of evil set during the English Civil War. When Matthew Hopkins is appointed Witchfinder General by the Puritans under Cromwell, he is empowered to travel the countryside with his henchmen and collect a fee for each witch from whom he extracts a confession – a policy which is exploited to the full.

The film will go into production next year, with a budget of $5-10 million.
