CONSTANTINE 2 has been off and on for about two years now. Every few months, someone like Francis Lawrence or Lorenzo di Bonaventura will announce that they’ve got ideas aplenty ready to go, and that the second installment is all but a sure thing. That’s all well and good – but would they go forward without Keanu Reeves, who made the character oh so memorable (that was sarcasm)?
That’s a decision they’ll have to face, because according to IESB, Keanu doesn’t want the gig anymore. Without giving an exact quote, the site reports that after talking to Reeves at a STREET KINGS junket, they determined a second go-round as John Constantine wasn’t something he’d be interested in doing anymore.
To destroy dreams of Keanu-sequels even further, they go on to say: “Reeves also mentioned that there are no characters left that he’s played that he has any desire to return to.” While they bemoan the fact that we won’t be seeing “Ted” on the big-screen ever again, I choose to rejoice the confirmation that “Neo” is truly dead. As for Constantine – I wasn’t a fan of the first flick, so I’m not shedding any tears. If they do go with someone else, I’m guessing it will be a significantly cheaper actor, and the sequel will find itself headed for DVD shelves.
