No shock here: FX renews “American Horror Story” for second season

Yup…about as surprising as sunrise, but it is official. FX has gone ahead and renewed their most popular original series of all (premiere wise at least)…Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s genre hit “American Horror Story.”

Again, no shock here. “American Horror Story” debuted on October 5th to 5 million viewers, by far FX’s most watch series debut. Here’s what FX president and GM Jon Landgraf said about the extension:

“It’s one thing to have the ambition and guts to reinvent a genre in a way that makes it captivatingly fresh for a broad audience — it’s something else entirely to have the craft to back that ambition up…Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have hit the trifecta with Nip/Tuck, Glee and now American Horror Story, which will be scaring FX’s viewers to death for many years to come.”

You heard the man, many years to come. I will say, I liked the debut of “American Horror Story” (which Murphy directed), but have seen my interest wane with each passing episode. I love the actors in this show, particularly Jessica Lange (two time Oscar winner btw), but let’s be honest. As “out there” as the show wants to be at times, it’s quite derivative. In episode one I saw parallels to THE SHINING (the twins), BEETLEJUICE (the dark daughter), HEATHERS (the scary the bully girl plotline)…not to mention the entire conceit of the show, which can be traced to anything from OLD DARK HOUSE to AMITYVILLE HORROR.

That said, I’m not hating. I actually love how FX fosters creative talent to go places other networks wouldn’t. I just wouldn’t go so far as to say “American Horror Story” reinvents the genre.

Your thoughts on all this? Stoked for a continuation of “American Horror Story”?
