Official synopsis & casting updates for Tim Burton’s animated feature Frankenweenie!

So it’s no secret ’round here that Timmy Burton is going back to the well – in effect making the animated feature film version of a live-action short he made back in 1984. You know it as FRANKENWEENIE!

Yup, since last June we’ve heard a slew of FRANKENWEENIE updates. First was Burton’s waffling over whether to direct or not, then there was the story of Burton and Co. surreptitiously undergoing pre-production in London. Then came casting news, which revealed old Burton hats as being on board (Marty Landau, Winona Ryder, Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara). Well folks, it’s time to unveil more casting and the official synopsis for the film. Scope it…

Per a fresh Disney press release:

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.

In addition to those listed above, Charlie Tehan and Atticus Shaffer have been added to the cast. The FRANKENWEENIE script was written by longtime Burton accomplice John August (BIG FISH, CORPSE BRIDE).

So there it is, a few more FRANKENWEENIE nuggets. Stay tuned for more as we sift ’em!

FRANKENWEENIE walks into theaters October 5th, 2012.
