Love is in the air for Universal‘s new romantic comedy One Night Only. The latest feature from Will Gluck is filling stomachs with butterflies after earning $1.35 million in combined Thursday night and Monday secret-screening previews. If you’re keeping score at home, that’s the same amount Gluck’s Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, grossed in its Thursday night previews during its pre-Christmas opening. While Universal is pleased with One Night Only‘s debut, the studio continues to hope for at least a $10 million opening throughout the weekend.
One Night Only, directed by Gluck from a screenplay written by Travis Braun, stars Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro as two New Yorkers searching for love on the one night of the year when sex is legal. JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols reviewed the film, saying it’s “sappy and corny at times, but never goes too overboard.” Tyler continues, “Being sappy is practically a core tenet of these kinds of films. Despite being a cynical bastard myself, I was rooting for Turner and Barbaro, and felt everything about their interactions played perfectly into that. This was fun, quickly paced, entertaining, and a genuinely unique love story, which is pretty impressive for 2026.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to do gangbusters at the box office, having quickly become the highest-grossing film of 2026 with $1.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales to date. Analysts expect the Tom Holland and Zendaya-led sequel to drop by 60% in its second weekend, which is par for the course for superhero films. The film could make as much as $144 million, which would make it the third-best sophomore frame ever behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149.2M) and Avengers: Endgame ($147.3M).
Meanwhile, Searchlight‘s Super Troopers 3 (read our review here) opened on 2,760 theater screens on Thursday, with sources reporting a $350K debut. If you consider that Super Troopers 2 opened to $1.35M during its 4/20 Thursday debut, this could be the last time we see the Broken Lizard gang chugging syrup and pulling pranks on potential criminals. JoBlo’s Mike Conway gave Super Troopers 3 a 7 out of 10 in his review, a kinder score than most.
Finally, Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man is expected to make single digits this weekend, with many critics saying the comic book-inspired horror film is a gory mess that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You can read Tyler’s review here.
