Stage 9, the Disney-ABC web video venture, was online for 13 months before shutting down last March. Of their 20 or so projects in the works, the big budgeted (a quarter of a million is a lot of cheese in the world of webisodes) sci-fi series “Trenches” was one of the only properties that reached completion prior to the site going under. So instead of sitting on the finished product like a bunch of dopes, top studio brass have decided to sell the property to Sony, where it’ll now be shown in their own online entertainment avenue (Crackle) come Feb. 16th.
Under the deal, Sony gets distribution rights but Disney retains ownership of the property.
Running at less than an hour in total, and set in the future on a distant war torn planet, the 10-part story of “Trenches” centers around two groups of opposing soldiers fighting against each other only to realize that the real enemy is something else. Namely, a horde of vicious beasts!
Sounds promising, no?
Given the length of the series and the template put forth with last year’s “Angel of Death,” the idea is “Trenches” may at some point be turned into a feature film that studios can either play on TV or sell on DVD.
“Trenches” is the brainchild of Shane Felux, who found internet notoriety in 2005 with his fan film STAR WARS: REVELATIONS.
