Pack it in folks, an Emoji film is in development at Sony Pictures Animation

I'll forgo the usual "Hollywood is officially out of ideas" speech and just get right to it; Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Animation is developing a film centering around Emoji's, you know, those little images that nearly everyone on the planet has sent to each other at some point or another. If that wasn't bad enough, Sony actually paid near seven figures for this pitch following a bidding war with three studios; a bidding war! For a film about Emoji's!

Anthony Leondis was the one who pitched the idea to the studios, armed with storyboards which detailed just how the film would play out. Leondis will direct the film for Sony Pictures Animation as well as co-write the project with Eric Siegel. Leondis has directed IGOR as well the B.O.O.: BUREAU OF OTHERWORLDLY OPERATIONS, a Dreamworks Animation film which was scheduled to be released this year but ended up being removed from Dreamworks release schedule.
