Park Chan-wook assembles all-star cast for his Western movie, including Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler & Pedro Pascal

Director Park Chan-wook is looking to follow up No Other Choice with The Brigands of Rattlecreek, a Western movie which has been a passion project of his, and he’s assembled quite the all-star cast. Deadline reports that the project will star Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Tang Wei. Damn!

The Brigands of Rattlecreek

The film is said to follow “a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.” It will deal with themes of vengeance, retribution, the consequences of violence and the power of memory and family in the American West. This is definitely one to look out for.

S. Craig Zahler is writing the script, and the project is expected to be a hot package at the upcoming Cannes market. Chan-wook has been looking to make this one for more than a decade, and the time has finally arrived. The budget will be upwards of $60 million.

No Other Choice

Chan-wook’s last project, No Other Choice, stars Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil) as You Man-su, a devoted family man who is unexpectedly laid off from the paper company he has worked at for 25 years. After being humiliated in interviews and desperate to land another job, he quickly spirals and resolves to restore his dignity and ensure his family’s future by… killing his fellow job-seekers. I suppose that’s one way to go about it.

In his review, how own Alex Maidy called the film a captivating masterwork from one of the best directors in the business. “Park Chan-wook outdoes himself as a director with each new film he creates, and No Other Choice feels like a culmination of his skills as a visual artist and a storyteller, but far from being the end of his talents,” he wrote. “This is a film that is idiosyncratic in a way that many Korean films are, but it is one of the most accessible offerings from the country’s robust movie industry. Suspenseful and hilarious in equal measure, you will find yourself cringing with anticipation as much as you are chuckling at the audacity of the characters and their actions.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
