Parody trailer for Paul Schrader’s The Canyons with Lindsay Lohan seems to be in on the joke

Ah, THE CANYONS.  Such a strange beast this film has become.  You start with two acclaimed craftsman, writer/director Paul Schrader (RAGING BULL, AFFLICTION) and author Bret Easton Ellis (AMERICAN PSYCHO, THE RULES OF ATTRACTION) and throw in a flailing actress (Lindsay Lohan) and a porn star actor (James Deen) in a contemporary drama described only as “Youth, glamor, sex and Los Angeles, circa 2012.”  It’s almost the very definition of a hot mess.

And, that’s what’s so intriguing.  With the series of odd, yet appealing teasers we’ve seen for the film so far, it’s near impossible to put your finger on just what type of film it is.  Given the creative talent behind it, you would expect there to be something of substance, but they’re giving very little away.  Is it more THE INFORMERS or TAXI DRIVER?  LIGHT SLEEPER or THE RULES OF ATTRACTION?  According to this new parody trailer, it’s a 30’s-style comedy.  I’m not sure if they’re deflecting on purpose or if they just don’t know what the hell they’ve got yet.

Take a gander:

Here’s the description for the teaser(s):

“Last of the trailers (parody, that is). Nikolai Mentin, the editing intern who helped us out in NY, was kind enough to put together one last teaser, this is the style of the Thirities. It was fun teasing with these. People wanted images from the film and I didn’t want to do anything definitive until a distributor was on board so these teasers were an interim solution. The film is now completed and the next step is to screen for multi-platform distribs.”

THE CANYONS will hit theaters or whatever venue the distributors see fit sometime in 2013.
