There have been rumours circling that Patrick Stewart would be retiring following the release of Avengers: Doomsday. After all, the legendary actor is 85 years old and has been working in the industry for nearly his entire life. If that’s what he wanted to do, he’s more than earned it. However, Stewart recently addressed the speculation head-on in an interview with TV Insider.

“As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older,” Stewart said. “That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig’s head in Riz Ahmed‘s brilliant new series Bait. I can’t imagine ever officially ‘retiring.’ I’ll always and forever be an actor.“
I hate to think of a world in which we don’t have another Patrick Stewart performance to look forward to, so selfishly, I’m glad he’s not hanging it up just yet.
While his output has slowed in recent years, he’s hardly been absent from our screens. In addition to Riz Ahmed’s Bait series, which Stewart mentioned, he also provided the voice of Sir Ritchfield in The Sheep Detectives (he’s hilarious) and continues to voice Avery Bullock on American Dad.
Fans can next see him on the big screen when he once again plays Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday. He is set to return opposite many of his iconic original X-Men co-stars, including Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique

Speaking of Doomsday, the highly anticipated Marvel movie is still shrouded in secrecy, though there are plenty of alleged leaks to keep us busy.
Marvel Studios is returning to San Diego Comic-Con this year with a big Hall H panel, and I’m sure Doomsday will be a major focus. The panel will take place on July 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. PT.

Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
