Perry stars in Trek?

I don’t know too much about Tyler Perry except that he seems to have come out of nowhere and his movies make a wadload of money. If he keeps this pace up, he’ll be one of the richest men in entertainment, if he isn’t already. The writer, director, and star of success stories like DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN and MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION is now rumoured to be taking on a role that no expected: the head of Starfleet Academy in J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK redux.

Some people have expressed cynicism, calling this stunt casting to attract Perry’s faithful, church-going audience. Doubtful. Just because Perry has a minor role in a major blockbuster with an already established (and rabid) fan-base, it doesn’t mean people will be willing to sit through a sci-fi saga unless they were already predisposed to doing so before. That and J.J. Abrams takes characterization and casting much too seriously to pull a stunt like that. I’m sure Perry will be fine in the role, regardless of the fact that he’s best known for dressing up like an old woman. UGO.com has the full story HERE.
