Pirates spin-off?

Mega Producer, Jerry Bruckheimer has been talking to the Herald Sun about the possibility of furthering the cash cow that is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. And interestingly, he seems to be toying with the idea of a spin-off, rather than a further straight sequel:

“This is the end [of the current trilogy], but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility”, Bruckheimer tells the paper. “Certainly, in a moment at the end of the film there is a hope that something else might happen.”

Geoffery Rush also weighed in, and talked about the idea that any progression might not involve Johnny Depp:

“Inevitably they may think about it, but Johnny may say, ‘Pah, I’ve burnt out Jack. I couldn’t go there again’. Or he may not. I certainly know he wouldn’t say ‘Hey, treble my fee and I’ll do it.”

I don’t like the concept that the success of a franchise rests on one person, but I really feel that certainly, much of the financial clout that the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies have is down to Johnny Depp. I just think he covers every single demographic, and there aren’t that many people who do that. He simultaneously interests every man on the planet, because there’s no reason not to like him, and deep down every guy wants to be a pirate. And he interests every woman on the planet, because deep down they all want a piece of him. Would PIRATES be successful without him as witty Jack? I’m not so sure. I guess we’ll have to see.
