Planet of the Apes returns to theaters in late July

The PLANET OF THE APES has had a strong resurgence with the surprising quality and popularity of 2011's RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and its sequel DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Now it's time for the original to rush back in and introduce itself to the new generation of ape-ophiles.

As part of TCM's Big Screen Classics series, Fathom Events will present the original 1968 classic PLANET OF THE APES in theaters in over 650 theaters nationwide. The film will play at 2:00 and 7:00 PM local time on Sunday, July 24th and Wednesday, July 27th only.

Starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall, PLANET OF THE APES revolultionized film effects with John Chambers' masterful prosthetics work. Here's the synopsis:

Complex sociological themes run through this science-fiction classic about three astronauts marooned on a futuristic planet where apes rule and humans are slaves. The stunned trio discovers that these highly intellectual simians can both walk upright and talk. They have even established a class system and a political structure. The astronauts suddenly find themselves part of a devalued species, trapped and imprisoned by the apes.

The newest APES movie, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, is due to hit theaters on July 14, 2017, starring Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Gabriel Chavarria, Judy Greer, and Steve Zahn.
